Robert L. Hampton, Ph.D. is a professor in the Department of Sociology at Tennessee State University. He previously served York College of the City University of New York as president and professor in the Department of Social Sciences. Prior to joining York College, he served as associate provost for academic affairs for the University of Maryland, College Park, as well as and dean for undergraduate studies and professor of family studies and professor of sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is a Hartman Mentoring Scholar and has published extensively in the field of family violence including several edited. He is completing a new book entitled The Prevention and Treatment of Interpersonal Violence Within the African American Community: Evidence-based Approaches. He is one of the founders of the Institute on Domestic Violence in the African American Community. His research interests include partner violence, family abuse, community violence, student success in higher education and social change. Dr. Hampton's degrees include: a bachelor of arts from Princeton University, as well as a master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Hampton served in the United States Army Reserve from 1972 to 1996 and retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
