Beth E. Richie, Ph.D.

Dr. Richie will moderate the discussion entitled, History of Grassroots Organizing in the Domestic Violence Movement and Civil Rights Movement: Parallels for Engaging and Mobilizing the Community, which is scheduled for the morning of Monday, March 19, 2007 .

Beth Richie is a professor in the criminal justice department and women's studies program at the University of Illinois at Chicago . She has directed her work toward advocating for battered women for more than 20 years. Dr. Richie's research interests center on battered African American women and the relationship between violence against women and women's participation in crime. She is a prolific author having published several works, including "Compelled to Crime: the Gender Entrapment of Black Battered Women." Dr. Richie is the recipient of numerous awards, including the National Advocacy Award by the Department of Health and Human Service, Office of Violence Prevention; the Audre Lorde Legacy Award of the Union Institute, and the Visionary Award of the Violence Intervention Project. Dr. Richie is a member of the steering committee for the Institute on Domestic Violence in the African American Community.
