Ellen Pence PhD
Founder of the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project (DAIP) 

Ellen Pence is one of the founders of the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project (DAIP) in Duluth , MN . She has been active in institutional change work for battered women since 1975. She has worked on legislative efforts, legal reform projects, shelter and advocacy program development, training programs for judges, probation officers, law enforcement officers, and human service provides.

Dr. Pence is the author of several educational manuals and curricula for classes for battered women, men who batter, and law enforcement trainers. She has co-authored two books: Educational Groups for Men Who Batter: The Duluth Model co-authored with Michael Paymar, and Coordinated Community Response to Domestic Violence: Lessons from the Duluth Model co-authored with Melanie Shepard.

Dr. Pence is the Executive Director of Praxis International, a research and technical assistance program on community-based anti-violence initiatives. In addition, she provides trainings on conducting audits of institutional responses to domestic violence cases both in the United States and abroad. She is currently a trainer for the Domestic Abuse Intervention Project.
