Rubin "Hurricane" Carter

Ms. Carter will provide the closing keynote address, which is scheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday, March 20, 2007. Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, is a riveting speaker, whose real-life story was depicted in the 1999 film "The Hurricane," starring Denzel Washington. An acclaimed professional boxer on the road to becoming the middleweight champion of the world, Mr. Carter was wrongly convicted and sentenced in 1967 to three life terms for triple murder. The case received considerable attention both nationally and abroad. He was given a new trial nine years later, but again was found guilty. In February 1988, Mr. Carter's 22-year-old indictment was finally overturned, making him a free man. After his release from prison, Mr. Carter founded the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted, for which he served as director until recently. Mr. Carter is a highly-sought speaker and has addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations and has spoken alongside former South African President Nelson Mandela. Mr. Carter is working on his next book, The Way of the One-Eyed Man .
